Multi-network asset tracker

A compact, power-efficient tracker, just 48 × 16 mm, that reports location and status over cellular, GNSS and Wi-Fi, with a web application for managing devices and viewing their data. Built end to end, from the circuit board to the cloud and the screen.

The challenge

Knowing where things are, wherever they go

The client needed reliable location and status monitoring in a device small enough to travel with the assets it tracks and efficient enough to run for long periods on a battery.

It had to keep working across very different environments and connectivity conditions: indoors and outdoors, with and without a clear view of the sky, and with mobile coverage that comes and goes.

What we built

Device, firmware and web, designed together

Hardware

Custom electronics

Custom electronics on a 48 × 16 mm board, bringing cellular, GNSS and Wi-Fi together with sensing, power management and battery monitoring.

  • 48 × 16 mm board footprint
  • Cellular, GNSS and Wi-Fi on one device
  • On-board sensing
  • Power management and battery monitoring

Firmware

Embedded firmware

Firmware that handles connectivity, works out the device's position, reads its sensors and reports to the cloud while keeping power use low.

  • Connectivity and positioning
  • Sensor acquisition
  • Power management and cloud communication

Web

Web application

A custom web application for managing devices and viewing their location, status and telemetry.

  • Live device overview
  • Location on a map with position source and accuracy
  • Status, battery and sensor telemetry

Result

A working tracking system, end to end

  • Three networks on a 48 × 16 mm board: cellular, GNSS and Wi-Fi, covering the full path from the physical device to the cloud and the web interface.
  • One team owned the electronics, the firmware and the web application, so changes in one layer were carried through the others straight away.
  • Working prototypes in six months, delivered with their firmware and web application.
