Smart pistol round counter

A smart module that sits inside a pistol grip, counts every round fired without touching the mechanism, warns when ammunition runs low and reports the weapon's location over the cellular network.

The challenge

A tracker and counter inside a pistol grip

The client wanted to know how many rounds each pistol has fired, how many are left in the magazine and where the weapon is, without changing how it handles. The electronics work with a custom magazine and are integrated into the grip.

Everything had to fit in a 67 × 20 × 15 mm module, survive the shock and vibration of firing, and still give several antennas enough room to work.

What we built

A low-power ATSAM board with cellular, GNSS and magnetic sensing

Hardware

Round counter board

A tiny board built around a low-power ATSAM microcontroller, packing sensing, positioning and cellular connectivity into the grip.

  • Contactless magnetic round detection
  • Accelerometer for detecting shots and movement
  • Cellular and GNSS with several antennas in a tiny space
  • USB-C battery charging
  • Low ammo indication
  • Vibration-proof design in 67 × 20 × 15 mm

Firmware

Complete firmware

Firmware that counts rounds, warns the user and tracks the weapon, while keeping power use low.

  • Round counting from the magnetic and motion sensors
  • Low ammo indication
  • GPS tracking
  • Data upload to the client's server

Delivery

Ready to manufacture

Everything needed to build the first prototypes and connect them to the client's system.

  • Schematic and PCB layout
  • Complete firmware
  • Server integration
  • Manufacturing files

Result

A working prototype in three months

  • Contactless round counting with a low ammo warning, built into the grip.
  • Cellular, GNSS and sensing in a 67 × 20 × 15 mm module.
  • Three months from the start of the project to the first working prototype.
